Banning, CA: The Bobcats Are Back

They’re back.

A few weeks ago I started seeing this momma bobcat climb over the fence and stroll through my yard to reach the golf course and open fields beyond. Often she would return a short time later with a squirrel or a rabbit in her mouth and hop over the fence to the overgrown shrubbery in the yard behind mine. I saw one of her kittens try to follow her over the fence that morning, and heard from neighbors they think she has three this time around, but I can’t say for sure.

Picture was made with a Nikon full-frame DSLR and a 300mm F2.8 lens. Throw is 31 feet from my back door, and this image is cropped a fair amount as well. I was leaning against the door frame, standing on one foot, using the other to keep Blanca the cat from dashing into the back yard. The right side of the frame is a bit darker than the left, part of my screen door was blocking part of my lens.

I think I spooked her when I made this picture, as I haven’t seen her since. I hope she just found another route to her hunting grounds.
