Lake Elsinore, CA: Wet Winter Results In Wildflower “Superbloom”

I ventured down to Walker Canyon in Lake Elsinore to see the wildflowers blooming on the hillsides. Apparently the trails are only open on weekends, creating a mess as visitors traipse around the barriers and among the flowers to photograph themselves, trampling the delicate blooms in the process. Motorists often park along the side of […]

Forest Falls, CA: Expecting Rain And Snow This Week

I woke up earlier than usual this morning, courtesy my cat. I got to enjoy hearing the expected rainstorm as it started. There’s rain in the forecast for much of the next week. I expect we’ll get scenes like the above, captured some years ago, during a morning snowstorm in the local mountains, a short […]

Highland, CA: Looks Like Winter From The East Valley

I took a short drive this afternoon to see what San Bernardino Peak and Mt. San Gorgonio looked like covered in snow following the recent storm from various locations around town. I made photos of a new housing development with the snow-covered peaks in the background, and along Base Line at various vantage points. It […]

Big Bear Lake, CA: It’s About Time We Started Getting Some Snow

Going back through more old pictures, I found this one I really enjoyed from 10 years ago. A late May snowstorm surprised everyone, including this carved bear at the entrance to a business in Big Bear Lake. I wouldn’t mind being pleasantly surprised by a healthy snowfall this year, it’s about time we started getting […]

Running Springs, CA: Clouds Cling To Mountainside

I drove up to Running Springs and Snow Valley yesterday to check on conditions. Returning to the flatlands, I stopped and grabbed this view, showing clouds clinging to the mountainside and Hwy 330 snaking in and out of canyons. The communities of Redlands and Mentone can be seen in the distance.

Prescott, AZ: Courthouse Lit Up For The Holidays

A Facebook post by Les Stukenberg, photographer at The Daily Courier, reminded me of the picture above I made a few years ago during a quick road trip to Prescott, Arizona. Yavapai County decorates the courthouse every year for the holidays and makes a big deal out of turning the lights on. See the story […]

San Bernardino Nat’l Forest, CA: Will We Get A Good Snow Year?

In going through some old files, I came across this favorite from some years ago, showing a father and son thoroughly enjoying themselves at Snowdrift Snow Tubing Park a few miles up the hill in the San Bernardino National Forest. Recents rains and today’s low temperatures have me hopeful we’ll get a good snow year.

Environmental Portrait: A Guy With A Car In A Garage

Sometimes the little guy wins. Former colleague Troy Lyman’s research into failing passenger seat air bag sensors on Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky vehicles like his own led the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to open an inquiry. On Lyman’s referral, I received a call from Steve Massie, design director at Automotive News, […]
